You Cultivate What You Celebrate

Have you ever heard the phrase, “You cultivate what you celebrate”?  It’s true if you think about it. When raising our children, we celebrate the first smiles, the first steps, the first words, the first ‘going in the potty’, the first A’s in school, the first successful pirouette, the first home run; you get the picture. We celebrate the behaviors and actions that we hope will continue and become part of their lives.
When accelerating a culture of generosity in a church, we know that if you celebrate generosity, you will see generosity increase.  When people see others being generous with their time, talent, treasure, love, words, prayers, and service they will begin to do the same.
If you want to take it to another level, encourage those acts of behavior by celebrating them!  Celebrate them on Sunday mornings during worship. Celebrate them in video. Celebrate them in person. Celebrate them on social media. Celebrate them in small groups.  Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate.
When you publicly celebrate generosity you:
  • Model Jesus. Who was more generous than Jesus?
  • Move people. Who is not moved by a story of celebration and learning how people’s lives are changed by the Holy Spirit?
  • Mirror behavior. Often times people need to see what living a generous life looks like so they can begin on that path.
Here’s an example of a church celebrating the one year anniversary of a One Fund initiative. This video was done internally with some pretty basic equipment and editing software. It takes some time and intentional planning, but is SO worth it!
How is your church celebrating generosity?  I’d love to learn from you.
