I have the privilege of working with a pastor this spring who truly understands how to be a leader. We are in the process of a capital campaign with Commitment Sunday landing on April 10, 2011. In most campaigns we give the leaders of the church an opportunity to commit early to encourage everyone in the church that “we can do this!”
We have begun this phase of the campaign and a week ago we began a series of 17 small group meetings to prepare the leaders to make their commitment early. As I listened to the pastor on Monday during the first of the 17 I wished every pastor in America could have heard what he was saying and how he was saying it. I gave him some guidance on what I hoped he would accomplish with his words and man did he own this process and make it his. Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler would have been proud of how he made the original his own.
The pastor did three things that on paper are quite simple and when you listened to him talk it seemed effortless. It WAS effortless for him because he totally believed in EVERYTHING he was saying. Here are the three points:
- He shared the vision – AGAIN!!!!!! Pastors assume that their leaders know the vision AND are bought into it. (You know what happens when you assume right? If you don’t please contact me and I will tell you:) Pastors have to keep sharing the vision with the leaders over and over again. We think we only have to be repetitive with the new people. WRONG!
- He taught biblical generosity. He shared with them what the scriptures have to say about giving and how God honors sacrifice. He taught his leaders. Once again Pastors assume their leaders know WAY more than they do about most things; especially giving.
- He shared with his leaders what he and his family were going to give. He did not give a dollar amount, but he did give them a %. He told them what % his family gives in their tithes and offerings (over 10%) and then what % on top of that they were going to give to the campaign. He said “I am not asking you to do anything I am not prepared to do myself.” Good stuff. He is putting his money where his mouth is.
Increasing giving in the church is quite simple if the Senior Pastor will follow this pastors’ lead.
- Share the vision
- Teach biblical generosity
- Model the behavior
It is that simple. Do you agree or disagree?
